Weighted Assessment 1: A Useful Checkpoint
WA1 mock papers for students' practice, and a few thoughts on what students should be focusing on at this part of the year.
One of the core strategies in PSLE preparation (and indeed learning in general) is not to let gaps in understanding compound. Now that we’re around 7 weeks into the academic year, this is great time to review the new topics that have been taught in P6, and revise past topics from P4-P5.
The weighted assessment exam is a good format to check that our understanding up to this point is solid, and to surface any areas where we need more practice.
We’ve also noticed that some schools don't actually have weighted assessment exams (e.g. see this FB thread). While we understand the reduced emphasis on exams in the earlier schooling years, we do feel it would be a good idea to start building up to the rigours of the PSLE exam format now that we’re in the P6 year.
WA1 mock papers
Here, you can find a few weighted assessment papers for all students and parents in Singapore to use. These serve 2 purposes:
Check a student’s understanding of what's been covered up to this point, as PSLE heavily covers P5 and P6 topics.
Practice these in the context of a full paper, to get used to the time and format used in the PSLE.
The coverage is as follows:
For English - we cover all the major components of paper 2, including Grammar MCQ, Vocabulary MCQ, Vocabulary Cloze, Visual Text Comprehension, Grammar Cloze, Editing, Comprehension Cloze, Synthesis & Transformation, Comprehension Open-ended.
For Math - we cover all the major topics that have usually been taught up to this point in school, including Whole Numbers, Fractions, Measurement, Ratio, Percentage, Area, Perimeter and Volume, Symmetry, Angles and Logical Reasoning. We also emphasise the topics that have recently been taught in the first few weeks of P6 (Fractions, Percentage, Ratio).
For Science - we cover the following topics: Reproduction in Plants, Plant Transport System, Water and Changes of State, Electricity, Photosynthesis, Living Together, Adaptations, Forces. Most schools would have covered Forces in the first few weeks of P6.
For Chinese - we cover the major components of paper 2, as well as new vocab they have learned from the first few chapters of their 课本. The components are 语文应用 (P6课本第1-5课词语), 短文填空 (P6课本第1-5课词语), 阅读理解(选择题),完成对话,阅读理解二A组(选择题+书面互动题),阅读理解二B组.
